The raptor, scientifically classified within the Dromaeosauridae family, was a swift and intelligent predator that roamed Earth during the Cretaceous period, roughly 145 to 66 million years ago. These agile theropods, which include iconic species like Velociraptor and Deinonychus, are renowned for their sickle-shaped claws, keen senses, and razor-sharp teeth—features that made them formidable hunters in prehistoric ecosystems.

Among the most distinctive fossils left behind are raptor teeth: laterally compressed, curved like a backward-facing comma, and lined with fine serrations that functioned like microscopic sawblades. These teeth weren’t just tools for tearing flesh—they were evolutionary marvels, optimized for strength, precision, and durability. Microscopic wear patterns and enamel structures offer paleontologists clues about diet, feeding behavior, and even species differentiation.

Some raptor species, such as Buitreraptor and Austroraptor, had unusually grooved teeth lacking serrations, suggesting a possible adaptation for fish-based diets. Others, like the Japanese dromaeosaurid identified from a single tooth, have reshaped scientific understanding of raptor evolution and geographic distribution.
