Megalodons, the undisputed heavyweight champions of the seas, were the largest sharks and possibly the biggest fish ever to exist. Ruling the oceans for over 20 million years, these giants are estimated to have reached lengths between 15 and 18 meters (50-60 feet). They cruised warm waters worldwide, feasting on whales and other large marine mammals. Their extinction, around 2.6 million years ago, is most likely linked to a combination of factors. Cooling oceans may have reduced their suitable habitat and prey availability, while competition with other predators could have also played a role.
